What Are We Actually Calculating Here?
Think of your body like a car that needs fuel to run. Even when you're just sitting around watching Netflix, your body is working hard - your heart is pumping, your brain is thinking, your lungs are breathing. This "idle" energy need is called your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR).
But you don't just sit around all day (hopefully!). You walk, work, exercise, even fidget. When we add all your daily activities to your BMR, we get your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) - basically, how many calories you burn in a typical day.
Here's where it gets interesting: if you eat exactly your TDEE calories, you'll maintain your current weight. Eat less, and you'll lose weight. Eat more, and you'll gain weight. It's like a simple math equation, but for your body!
How Do We Calculate This?
We use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (sounds fancy, but it's just a proven formula) to calculate your BMR based on your age, gender, height, and weight. Then we multiply that by your activity level to get your total daily needs.
For weight loss: We subtract 500 calories (which typically leads to losing about 1 pound per week)
For weight gain: We add 500 calories (which typically leads to gaining about 1 pound per week)
For maintenance: We give you exactly what you burn
For weight gain: We add 500 calories (which typically leads to gaining about 1 pound per week)
For maintenance: We give you exactly what you burn
Why Should You Care About This?
Whether you're trying to lose those stubborn 10 pounds, bulk up for summer, or just maintain your current awesome self, knowing your calorie needs takes the guesswork out of eating. No more wondering "Am I eating too much?" or "Why am I not seeing results?" - you'll have your personal roadmap!
